In the early days Community Games events were run at a 'Sports Day'. Sports days kicked off with a parade from the Church to the football field led by the Longford Pipe band. There were many novelty events held also and the day ended with a Parish Social held in the Auburn Hall. In the Games, many Edgeworthstown athletes have competed successfully at County Level and have gone on to the National Finals held at Mosney in County Meath. In their first appearance at County level the team won the Peter Kelly Award for the 'Best Turned Out Team', this was in 1973. They also won 6 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. In those early years the Dancing Feis came under the umbrella of the Community Games and such diverse subjects as the running of the Feis and the provision of a Community Centre were discussed at the meetings. Over the years the majority of children in the parish have taken part in most of the Games Events from athletics to team sports like football, Soccer, basketball etc., to chess, draughts, Variety and Choir. Below is a list of some of our gold medal winners, as far as can be recalled: Gerard Scott, Pat Duffy, Mickey O'Hara, Derville Mc Gerr, Brady Family Aughafin, Doherty's Devine Crescent, Anne Callaghan, The Variety Acts, the Choir and Art. Many more too numerous to mention. An interesting financial statement was uncovered during this research. In 1977 the Club's receipts were £439.65 and the expenses were £260.02 The Games are still going strong in the area. The present committee is:
President: Anna Mc Gerr
Chairman: S. Gilchrist
Secretary: Anne Doyle
Treasurers: John Mc Gerr and Mary Flynn
Delegates: John Mc Gerr and Maureen Finnan.
