Edgeworthstown Livestock Mart.
Fair Days were held on the third Monday of every month in the main street of Edgeworthstown. Things were chaotic. Children had the day off school because people thought it too dangerous for children to be passing by the animals on the way to school. After some consideration it was felt the town could do with a proper mart. In 1958 West Midland Farmers built a single-ring mart on the Longford Road just outside the town. The first sale was in 1959 and all sales were on a Friday. In 1963 and 1966 there were two small changes in ownership. In 1970 many changes were made. The mart was bought by Golden Vale and in the same year another ring was added, now called the Heifer ring. They also built an extension at the back for the intake of cattle. Sales were now switched to Mondays and the mart renamed Golden Vale Mart. They also purchased a small farm of land to the rear of the mart. In October 1988 ownership of the mart changed once more. John Gilligan now owned the mart and is still the owner. Edgeworthstown Livestock Mart now employs two full time workers, a secretarial assistant and a general operator, plus many part time staff to assist on mart days. Other sale days were added to the traditional Monday sale of cattle. Sheep are sold on Tuesdays and weanlings on Wednesdays. There are also special sales of Pure-bred Cattle on Saturdays in the Spring and Autumn.
Station House.
The Station House in Edgeworthstown, which is just outside the town, has served Edgeworthstown and a large area around it for many years and continues to do so. Although now mainly used for passengers and mail it once served farmers and businesses in the area, transporting cattle, bulk vegetables such as beet and grain and other heavy items now mainly carried by lorries. The station has won awards for it's look over the years. Current station master is Eddie Hughes.
